Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure whose purpose is to soften the irregularities of the skin surface or to mask the scars leveling off the surface. Such leveling is accomplished by removal of a large part of the epidermis of the surface of the fabric layer on which it rests, the dermis. The degree of improvement varies from person to person and depends mostly entity ‘initial irregularities and the general conditions of the skin. Dermabrasion can also be used for the removal of tattoos, freckles and for the improvement of facial wrinkles.
Preparing to intervention
It should be avoided in the period of the menstrual cycle, in pregnant women and during the active phase of the ‘acne.
A month before the ‘outstanding speech smoking to decrease the risk of postoperative complications. Some studies have shown that the incidence of complications is 10 times higher in smokers than in those who do not smoke. If the smoke is eliminated for 10 days or more before the operation, the incidence of complications and ‘equal to that of non-smokers. It is recommended to patients treated with oral contraceptives to stop taking these medications one month prior to surgery.
Two weeks before is avoided l intake of acetylsalicylic acid based drugs (aspirin).
The night before must be done carefully cleaning shower, washed my hair, removed the nail polish for hands and feet and cosmetics from her face.
Observe the fast of at least 8 hours before the ‘intervention.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, or as a combination of intravenous sedation and a local anesthetic. The local anesthetic is injected into the tissues when the patient already sedated. There and pain during the procedure and the duration of the procedure depends on the area to be treated, from a few minutes to an hour and a half, as well as the need to stay overnight in hospital.
If interested dermabrasion facial Dr. Grassetti usually acts by treating not only the affected area but an entire aesthetic unit in which it is located (the aesthetic unity corresponds to one of the areas in which the face is split according to ‘uniformity’ aesthetics).
The areas to be treated are leveled by the action of steel brushes or cutters containing diamond particles which, resting on the skin with light pressure, rub off the more superficial layers. The treatment can be done in several sessions when the scars are pretty deep.
On completion of work on the treated areas are applied gauze soaked with saline.
More than pain the patient will experience a feeling of discomfort, tingling, itching or burning in the post-operative period, but this is really minimal and in any case will be short-lived and can be reduced or eliminated by normal analgesics. Basically it will feel neither more nor less than what we have experienced as children after surface abrasion!
The skin will be red and swollen; It may be harder to eat and drink immediately after.
Gauze soaked in saline applied to the end of the intervention, in the extended dermabrasion, to be changed every hour during the first 24 postoperative hours. During this phase can be noticed, on the abraded areas, the presence of a secretion of yellow color that is to be considered normal. He spent the first twenty-four hours, the treated areas should be washed every four or five hours with gauze and saline and after each wash should be applied plenty of cream with vitamin “A” and “E”. This procedure must be performed for ten days at home by the patient or a family member. In the case that the dermabrasion has been performed on a limited area it will be sufficient a moderately compressive medication to leave undisturbed for a week.
It will form a crust on the area treated, which will fall and will leave under a new layer of skin taut and rosy. This growing cause a slight itch: so they will use soothing creams and moisturizers.
After 5 days the hair may be washed.
During the first week you should not lower his head for example to pick something up from the ground or allacciassi shoes.
Shaving will be suspended for the first 20 days and then you start again with an electric razor.
After two weeks you can go back to work. They will be filming the common sports activities after two weeks, while for the most intense sports will be preferable to wait at least four weeks.
Smoking should be avoided for 3 weeks after the ‘operation. Measures should also be avoided physical efforts and maneuvers to push.
For a month should be avoided swimming in the pool, as well as the exposure to sun and wind (winter holiday).
The “new” skin will be very delicate, a little swollen, sensitive and slightly reddened for a few weeks, and then it will be necessary the use of hypoallergenic skin moisturizers for some months. The skin texture of the treated areas may differ from that of the untreated areas making themselves sometimes necessary to use a trick to mask the differences. A month later the ‘intervention thus can be applied to any kind of makeup, to remove completely before bedtime. The redness may persist for 3 months.
For the first 12 months after surgery, the skin must be protected from the action of sunlight through the use of sunblock creams, until all the melanin is back completely on the skin thus achieving the desired result, and final, making the procedure made virtually undetectable.
Among the general complications it is to remember the possibility of a modest bleeding, but especially infection: this is treatable with antibiotics and local wound dressings, but it is feared because it can lead to poor quality of scarring.
Hypo- or hyperpigmentation on the treated areas (darker patches or lighter than the surrounding skin) rather are typical complications “specifications.” Hyperpigmentation and ‘usually due to early exposure to the Sun and therefore can be prevented by the use of suitable protective products; hypopigmentation, however, and ‘consequence of deep dermabrasion that destroy the melanocytes (the cells that give the dark color of the skin) and its treatment is not always successful.
They may appear, on the treated areas, scars that are the result of dermabrasion too deep; sometimes, when the irregularities of the skin are remarkable, some scars can not be avoided. Some patients tend to heal abnormally and hypertrophic way: they will be followed as outpatients for a longer period with appropriate safeguards to silicone and cortisone to soften the scar.
Sometimes they can appear on the skin of tiny white dots (Milia), that disappear by themselves or with the use abrasive sponges and soaps.
Dermabrasion can improve the appearance of the skin, but no treatment can never remove all scars and flaws or change the ‘age!
Although older people heal more slowly, more important factors are your skin type, color, and medical history. For example, dark skin, black or Asian, after a treatment you can cover the patches. Likewise those who have sensitivity to cold can have a worsening of symptoms. If you have freckles over the treatment, the area will disappear. The result, therefore, will depend, in addition to the choices of the surgeon, by a variable number of individual factors, some of which are not predictable.
The length of the result is individual: it is inevitable that over time the skin will relax or add new imperfections on it. It must be recognized that, even without subsequent retouching, years from operation distance, the appearance of the face will be better than it would if the ‘intervention had not been performed.
